The Volga GAZ 24-10 is a Soviet car -- and a poorly built, laughably outdated one. Today I'm reviewing the GAZ 24-10, and I'm going to show you all the quirks and features of a Soviet car that lagged far behind what we had in North America. I'm also going to drive the Volga and show you what it's like on the road.

The Trabant makes this look like a Rolls Royce. I remember seeing a 1982 or so Soviet Lada Signet when I was a kid, looking through the window and seeing the speedometer reading up to 260 km/h. I asked him if this car could really go 260 km/h and he said "maybe if you put a rocket on it or dropped it off a cliff".

The history of "communist cars" dates back to before communism. Emperor Nicholas II wanted to create a "people's car", simple, cheap and very widespread. The development of the car project did not start due to the First World War. But, at the same time, really good cars were made in Russia at that time. On average, the power for a passenger car and for a 1.5-ton truck was then 20-40 hp, in Russia limousines with 40, 60 and 90 hp were produced, they were going to produce 1.5-ton trucks with 65 h.p. V8. What was a "promising engine" for the automotive industry in Russia at the time? This is the engine proposed by engineer Kashirin, a two-stroke diesel engine, 32.38 hp / L and less than 1 kg / hp. He offered to make V2 blocks, 2.47 L, 80 hp 1400 rpm, it was possible to create engines of any desired size. Another Russian engineer, Lyamin, developed and tested a supercharger in 1914. Need to create a big truck? Why not? 50 tons, 325 hp, steam engine, will it suit you? Yes, our locomotive factories will produce it. What? Is your 200-ton tank stuck? Well, then we will build a 650-horsepower tractor... No kidding - the Russians then really had a lot of interesting ideas that had a chance to be implemented. During the communist era, the entire economy was governed by a planned system. Formally, it had to direct development in such a way as to make the most efficient use of resources. In practice, this turned out that practically nothing worked as it should. It just doesn't matter how well you work, if you are a Soviet official, you will somehow get your salary. Your plant can produce at least cans on wheels, the main thing for you is reporting in documents, "I fulfilled the plan." Indifference to everything became one of the main reasons for the destruction of the Soviet economy in the 1980s and 1990s. If you want to have a really good car, then you need free competition, you need a market, and you need interaction with other countries. Only then will the car have good equipment, good engine, modern design, and reasonable price. Yes, the price of cars in the USSR was enormous. Yes, the worker in the USSR did not receive part of the money in his hands - due to this, the state provided him with housing, medicine and vacations. But, anyway, heck, when you have to raise money for 15-20 years to buy a Volga, or several years to buy Zaporozhets or Moskvich, this is not "normal". For reference, now in Russia, under capitalism, the population is provided with cars 6 times better than in the USSR, more than 2 times better apartments, and so on. Russians in the 2010s are on average 10 cm taller than Russians in the 1970s. That is, in the USSR there was no "paradise" in which you only have to pay for cars, in fact, you paid for everything. And that is why the concepts of "Volga GAZ 24-10" and "cars of the 1980s" turned out to be compatible. Engineers in the USSR could develop anything (and they developed many promising projects), but, none of the bosses had any difference what they were driving in country.

In North America in the 80s cars had back seat belts, but many people didn’t use them. Believe it or not, the thinking was, “You’re in the back! You don’t need a belt.” So it’s not that surprising that some countries didn’t include them.

Years ago I met a guy at work that had recently moved out of a former Soviet country. One of the 'stans I think. I took him out to lunch one day and we walked out to my Ford Ranger. As we got in he asked me "What reason do you have to give to buy a vehicle like this?" I did not understand the question at first. I said, "you want one and you buy it...?" Took a while to sink in that to get a "Utility Vehicle" like a pickup truck, where he grew up, you needed to have demonstrate a NEED for something like that and then of course you were on a list. As we talked he mentioned how stunned he was when he first saw our grocery stores. Entire walls of fresh vegetables that was always full. It was not a matter of IF you could get lettuce, it was a matter how how much and what type did you want. Very sobering view of the differences.

There are comments here regarding the first aid kit and you can also find good content about it online. It's not funny if it's much more advanced than anything going on today... Is it? ofcourse their cars are shit, what did you expect from communism. Regulated economy with fixed prices never creates anything competitive. If you think the car industry is bad, think about the fact that once communists established kolkhoz(collective farms) and confiscated all the land from private owners, they stopped being able to feed themselves with their own grain, and started importing grain from other countries, the agriculture was so devastated by the communists, that they only recovered in early 2000s! almost 10 years after the communism ended. The industry "evolved" despite communism, not because of it. They also bough the patterns for other cars like lada from other countries, because they were unable to produce anything by themselves. The fcking cars were the last of their problems. Also even receiving car as shit as this one was beyond impossible, you were required to wait more than 10 years, and nothing was guaranteed, unless you had powerfull friends.

GAZ is an abbreviation where the first letter is the City Gorky (today Nizhny Novgorod). The city had it's name after Soviet writer Maxim Gorky (he was born there). There is a deer on the coat of arms of Nizhny Novgorod, thus the factory inherited this deer for it's logo. Are your other videos are as trustworthy as this one?

When I grew up, my uncle had one of these. As a child obviously it was the thing I dreamed of owning. However it never happened, the transition went sooo fast some could not cope with the speed of it. Anyway, now seeing one capitalist, spoiled, and entitled Dou(g)che laughing at every small detail makes me quite angry tbh.
